PSHE and RSE

At Wisbech St Mary, we have one dedicated lesson for PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) each week; in addition, because we believe PSHE underpins the entire curriculum, it forms part of our core teaching and brings together citizenship with personal well-being, while promoting a British Values-based education. It is evident in assemblies and Collective Worship, in the relationships between staff and pupils and in the interactions between the children themselves. 

The PSHE curriculum is intended to support the school in developing a cohesive and comprehensive whole-school approach to personal, social, health and economic well-being (PSHE). 

Across school, from EYFS to Year 6, we use the Cambridgeshire Primary Personal Development Programme (PPDP) to support the sequencing and teaching of our PSHE curriculum. This curricular framework ensures there is progressive model of skills and knowledge, providing a whole-school approach to building these essential foundations – crucial for children to achieve their best, academically and socially. The PPDP ensures a comprehensive PSHE and Wellbeing programme throughout the primary years; it is a whole-school approach to promoting behaviour, safety, achievement and wellbeing.

Integrated within the PSHE curriculum is our Relationships and Sex Education curriculum (RSE). This part of the curriculum includes learning about what a positive friendship looks like, what families are like, and how to solve problems within friendships. It also includes learning about how we change as we grow up and later in Key Stage Two, we learn about  the changes we go through in puberty and intimate relationships.
