2025-2026 SPRING TERM
Welcome back to Spring Term, Octavia Class! We hope you all had a fantastic Christmas break and wish you a very Happy New Year. The children have returned with great enthusiasm and we are looking forward to an exciting and busy term of learning together in Year 3.
This term in English, the children will be developing their reading and writing skills through a range of engaging texts. They will be writing suspense stories, persuasive letters and discussion texts, while focusing on grammar skills such as dialogue, sentence types and adventurous vocabulary. Guided Reading will centre around The Firework-Maker’s Daughter, helping children to deepen their comprehension skills and discuss characters, themes and language choices.
In Maths, children will build on their understanding of number through work on place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, measurement and area. Lessons will include plenty of practical activities and problem-solving opportunities to help children explain their thinking with confidence.
Our Science learning will cover two exciting topics: Rocks and Light. Children will investigate different types of rocks and fossils, learning how they are formed and what they can tell us about the Earth’s past. In Light, they will explore how light travels, how shadows are formed, and why light is so important to our everyday lives through hands-on investigations.
In History, the children will continue their learning about the Anglo-Saxons, exploring daily life, key events and how England changed during this period. In Geography, they will learn about rivers around the world and later study the South West of England, developing map skills and understanding how physical and human features shape regions.
The children will also enjoy a rich creative curriculum. In Art, they will explore Anglo-Saxon Art and Ancient Egyptian Art, creating their own artwork inspired by historical artefacts. In Design and Technology, they will design and make pop-up books using moving mechanisms. Music lessons will focus on Vivaldi’s Winter and Sounds of the Sea by Benjamin Britten, where children will listen, analyse and compose their own pieces. In RE, pupils will explore key Christian beliefs, including the question “What kind of world did Jesus want?” and the events of Holy Week. Our PSHE learning will focus on anti-bullying, kindness and how to support others, helping to build a positive and respectful classroom community.
It promises to be a fantastic term full of learning, creativity and discovery. Thank you, as always, for your continued support – we are very excited to share the children’s achievements with you as the term unfolds.
