Godfrey Class
Year 1
Welcome to Year 1 Class Page!
Our ethos within Year 1 is to promote a love of independent learning.
The indoor and outdoor environments are carefully planned and richly resourced to allow for curriculum coverage to be achieved through a provision based approach and purposeful experiences. We aim to build upon the characteristics of effective learning which underpin the EYFS and provide our children with opportunities to be critical thinkers and problem solvers.
Supporting adults have a deep understanding of how to ensure children's experiences are developmentally appropriate and ensure learning is advanced by the use of careful interactions and open ended questioning.
Please see the curriculum overview attached for more details of what we will learning throughout this term.
Our homework grid for this term is also attached. We encourage you to work through the activities at your own pace and please share your learning with us on Class Dojo- we would love to see it!
In addition, it is really important that you please read daily together at home and record this in your home/school reading logs.

2025-2026 Autumn Term
Welcome to Godfrey Class!
This half term, Year 1 will be settling into new routines and diving into lots of exciting learning!
In Maths, we’ll be building strong number skills through place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, before moving on to fractions, money, time, shape, and measures such as mass and capacity, using plenty of practical activities to bring learning to life. In English, our storytelling will take us on adventures with lost and found tales inspired by Dogger, magical journeys with The Magic Paintbrush, and recounts of our own experiences, while our writing will also include fun instruction texts such as “How to Make a Silly Sandwich.”
In History, we’ll be asking big questions like “What is the past?”, discovering our family trees, investigating our local history, and learning how archaeologists piece clues together, while in Geography we’ll become map-makers, using aerial views, compass points, and symbols to draw and read maps.
Our Science learning will begin with the human body, naming body parts, exploring the five senses, and understanding sensory impairment, before moving on to everyday materials and magnets, testing their properties, investigating their uses, and carrying out simple experiments. During RE lessons, we’ll be reflecting on Christian beliefs about creation and asking “Who made the world?” before moving on to thinking about what Christians believe God is like. In PSHE, we’ll focus on relationships and belonging, exploring how to make others feel welcome and safe, then celebrate diversity and community by recognising similarities and differences between people, places, and lifestyles, and learning how we can care for our school and local environment. In Art, we’ll develop our use of colour, line, and brushstrokes, inspired by artists such as Van Gogh, Monet, Rembrandt, and Klee, while in DT we’ll enjoy hands-on cooking, preparing dips and vegetables as well as baking jam tarts, comparing sweet and savoury foods and learning about recipes from different cultures. During PE sessions, we’ll develop throwing, catching, and ball skills before moving into gymnastics, where we’ll practise travelling, turning, and rolling in different ways. Finally, in Music, we’ll explore beat and rhythm through percussion, compose our own samba pieces, and march to a steady pulse, even creating music fit for a marching band!

We can't wait for a fun term ahead!
